## **The Day I Put a Managing Director to Sleep**

Early in my sales career, I thought I had cracked the code for a great sales meeting. After a cold walk-in, the Managing Director of a key target account agreed to come for a lunch meeting at our office. This was my chance.

I had meticulously crafted a **20-slide, 35mm presentation**, carefully selecting from the 100-slide company library. It was packed with company accolades, product features, and impressive case studies. Everything a buyer should care about, right?

## **A Different Era, Same Sales Mistakes**

To set the scene—this was the **minicomputer era**.

No PowerPoint, no sleek animations. Instead, we relied on:

📽️ **35mm slides**—the curtains were drawn, and the boardroom lights dimmed.
📠 **Overhead projectors & flip charts**—cutting-edge at the time.
📞 **Phones the size of bricks**—not exactly portable.
💾 **No commercial internet**—email was still a niche tool.

With everything set, I dimmed the room and started presenting.

**And Then… He Fell Asleep**

Five minutes in—on slide five, “Our Partners”—I noticed something unsettling. The MD’s eyes **glazed over**. His posture **slumped**. And then…

😴 **He started snoring.**

I had spent **days** perfecting my pitch. I had rehearsed every slide, every stat, every case study. Yet, I lost him **in ten minutes**.

That’s when I had my wake-up call:
❌ I wasn’t selling.
❌ I wasn’t engaging, I was boring.
❌ I was broadcasting, and he had no interest in our products.

## **Why PowerPoint-Driven Pitches Fail**

That experience wasn’t unique—sales teams everywhere still fall into the same trap only with current technology. They open meetings with slide-heavy monologues about *their* company, products, and success stories. Meanwhile, buyers are left wondering, ***But what about me?***

Here’s the truth:

✅ Buyers don’t care about your product—they care about their *problems.*
✅ PowerPoint creates passive buyers; honest conversations create engaged ones.
✅ The best meetings aren’t presentations; they’re **collaborative discovery sessions.**

Top-performing sales teams have recognised this and made **the shift**—from pitching products to engaging in **Conversational Discovery.**

## **Making the Shift: From Pitching to Conversational Discovery and Storytelling**

Instead of dumping product information on buyers, great salespeople guide them through a **story** that starts with their struggles, not your solution.

Here’s how to build a story that resonates:

### **Step 1: Capture the Buyer’s Story with JTBD Switch Interviews**

Before crafting a sales narrative, you must understand what drives your buyers to switch. This starts with **Jobs-to-Be-Done (JTBD) Switch Interviews.**

**Shift90 Acquisition Methodology**
![Acquisition V1.2](https://www.whiteboard-storytelling.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/Acquisition%20V1_2-3.png?width=2754&height=440&name=Acquisition%20V1_2-3.png)

These interviews help uncover:
🔹 **The buyer’s struggle:** What pain or inefficiency led them to consider change?
🔹 **The trigger event:** What happened that made them take action?
🔹 **The decision-making journey:** What alternatives did they consider, and why?
🔹 **Your product/service capabilities and impact:** The aspects of your product/service they care about.

This process surfaces functional, emotional, and social reasons for buyers to switch, giving you **the raw material for a story that resonates.**

### **Step 2: Translate Buyer Insights into a Positioning Narrative**

Raw insights are valuable, but they need structure to be actionable. This is where [**April Dunford’s Positioning Canvas**](https://a.co/d/bfJZjjZ) comes in.

The **Positioning Canvas** helps teams distil JTBD insights into a straightforward, differentiated narrative by mapping:

🔹 **Competitive Alternatives** – What would buyers do if you didn’t exist?
🔹 **Distinct Attributes** – What unique capabilities make you different?
🔹 **Differentiated Value** – What business impact do those attributes enable?
🔹 **Best-Fit Customers** – Who cares the most about this unique value?
🔹 **Market Context** – What category makes your solution’s value instantly clear?

**Completing this canvas createsa structured positioning framework** that ensures your sales story is relevant, compelling, and differentiated.

### **Step 3: Build a Conversational Storyboard**

Once you have a strong positioning framework, it’s time to **transform it into a conversational discovery experience.** This is where the **sales storyboard** comes in.

**Shift90 Activation Methodology**
![Activation V1.2](https://www.whiteboard-storytelling.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/Activation%20V1_2-3.png?width=2177&height=375&name=Activation%20V1_2-3.png)

A **conversational storyboard** is a simple, structured way to engage buyers by walking them through their journey. Again, we use [April Dunford's Sales Pitch](https://a.co/d/a9RdCBG) method. It replaces the traditional pitch deck with an interactive, discussion-driven discovery.

🔹 **Start with their world:** Share insight on their pain points and challenges.
🔹 **Introduce alternative approaches:** Discuss options for solving their problem and why they fall short.🔹 **Highlight the “perfect world” scenario:** Define what an ideal solution would look like.
🔹 **Tell a customer hero story:** This story is about your customer’s journey, and the buyer is the hero of the story... not your company, people, or products🔹 **Summarise your differentiated value:** Connect your unique capabilities to their needs.
🔹 **Close with a CTA and next steps:**

Unlike static slides, a conversational storyboard makes buyers active participants in the discussion, keeping them engaged and invested in the mutual discovery outcome.

### **Step 4: Bring the Story to Life with a Whiteboard**

The final step is to ditch the deck and **whiteboard the story in real time.** Convert the conversational storyboard into a whiteboard story.

Why whiteboarding?

✅ **It’s interactive** – Buyers contribute, making them part of the conversation.
✅ **It forces clarity** – You can’t hide behind slides; you need a clear, structured story.
✅ **It’s memorable** – People (and salespeople) retain visual stories better than static presentations.

Imagine two scenarios:

1. You click through 20 slides, talking *at* your buyer.
2. You pick up a marker (or use a digital whiteboard) and sketch out their journey—asking them to react and contribute. If you are remote, you could use a visual confection “build”, which is instantly understood and where the conversation is natural after each build phase.

Which one sparks engagement? Which one feels like a real conversation?

Using conversational storytelling or **whiteboarding the story**, you turn sales meetings into dynamic, two-way discussions—leading to deeper connections and better outcomes.

## **The Takeaway: Own the Story, Increase Win Rate**

Looking back on my rookie years, I now understand why I lost that Managing Director. I was trying to *convince* him instead of *engaging* him and understanding his world.

Great sales meetings **guide a buyer through their own story.**

So the next time you walk into a sales meeting, ask yourself:

❌ Are you delivering a **PowerPoint pitch**?

✅ Or are you **leading a real conversation**?

The shift is happening. It’s time to ditch the slides and start **selling through discovery.** 🚀

## **Final Thoughts & Next Steps**

Want to transform your sales process?

✅ Conduct **JTBD Customer Switch Interviews** to capture real buyer insights.
✅ Usee **April Dunford’s Positioning Canvas** to structure a compelling sales narrative.
✅ Design a **conversational storyboard with techniques in Sales Pitches** that engage buyers.
✅ Develop a “Why Change” or “Why Me” whiteboard story and practice **whiteboarding techniques** to bring the story to life.

By mastering this process, you’ll move beyond pitching—and start having **sales conversations that win.**

**Take the Revenue Acceleration Scorecard to get insights on aligning your conversations that will resonate with your best customers**
